Building Blukers — Connecting 500K+ Blue-Collar Workers with Opportunity
The story behind Blukers, a mobile job platform for skilled trades with 800K+ downloads. How we approached job matching, rapid onboarding, and building for an underserved market.
The Problem
The blue-collar job market has been underserved by technology. While white-collar workers have LinkedIn, Indeed, and countless specialized platforms, skilled trades professionals — drivers, carpenters, HVAC technicians, pipefitters, roofers — were often stuck with outdated job boards, word-of-mouth referrals, or generic platforms that treated them as an afterthought.
Blukers was built to change that. A mobile-first job platform designed specifically for blue-collar workers and the companies that need their skills.
What We Built
Blukers connects blue-collar workers with employers across the United States through a streamlined mobile experience focused on speed and relevance.
Key Features
- Tailored job matches — recommendations aligned with worker skills, avoiding irrelevant white-collar listings
- Quick profile setup — build a professional, work-ready profile in under 5 minutes
- Location-based search — find jobs near your home, critical for trades work
- Favorites system — bookmark roles to apply later
- Work-ready profiles — optimized for hands-on positions, not corporate resumes
Technical Approach
Job Matching Algorithm
The matching algorithm was built differently from traditional job platforms. Blue-collar work is less about keyword matching and more about skills, certifications, location, and availability. We built a scoring system that weighs:
- Skill overlap — Does the worker have the specific trade skills the job requires?
- Proximity — How close is the job to the worker's home? (Travel time matters more in trades)
- Certification match — Does the worker hold required licenses or certifications?
- Availability — Can the worker start when the employer needs them?
This approach dramatically reduced irrelevant listings and improved application-to-hire rates.
Five-Minute Onboarding
Traditional resume builders are designed for office workers. A roofer doesn't need to list their "objectives" or "soft skills." We designed a streamlined onboarding flow that captures what matters for blue-collar hiring:
- Trade skills and specializations
- Certifications and licenses
- Equipment familiarity
- Physical capabilities and availability
- Work location preferences
The result: a complete, professional profile in under 5 minutes — compared to 30+ minutes on generic platforms.
Location Services
Location is critical for blue-collar work. Unlike remote-friendly tech jobs, a plumber in Dallas can't take a job in Seattle. We implemented:
- Real-time geolocation with radius-based job search
- Commute time estimates using traffic-aware routing
- Push notifications for new jobs within the user's preferred radius
- Map-based job browsing for visual area coverage
Performance at Scale
With 500K+ active job seekers and 100K+ jobs posted, the platform needed to handle significant load:
- Elasticsearch powers the job search with sub-100ms query times
- Background job processing for match calculations
- CDN-cached company profiles and job listings
- Efficient push notification batching for new job alerts
Results
- 800K+ downloads across iOS and Android
- 500K+ active job seekers on the platform
- 100K+ jobs posted by employers
- 4.8/5 average app rating (4.6 on Google Play, 4.2 on App Store)
Lessons Learned
Design for your actual user, not your assumptions. Blue-collar workers use phones differently than tech workers. Many are on older Android devices with smaller screens. Internet connectivity on job sites can be spotty. We optimized for these realities — offline-capable features, data-efficient operations, and a UI that works great on budget devices.
Speed of onboarding directly impacts adoption. Every additional field in the signup flow costs users. When we cut the profile creation time from 15 minutes to 5, we saw a 3x improvement in completion rates.
Trust is earned differently in this market. Blue-collar workers are often burned by platforms that promise jobs but deliver spam. We invested heavily in job quality verification and employer vetting, which paid off in word-of-mouth growth within trade communities.
