The challenge
The blue-collar job market has been underserved by technology for as long as the technology has existed. White-collar workers have LinkedIn, Indeed, and a long tail of specialized platforms. Drivers, carpenters, HVAC technicians, pipefitters, and roofers were left with outdated job boards, word-of-mouth referrals, or generic products that treated the trades as an afterthought and buried them under office listings. The mismatch is structural rather than cosmetic. Blue-collar hiring turns on skills, certifications, proximity, and start date, none of which a keyword-matching resume search handles well. Onboarding is the other half of it. A resume builder designed around objectives and soft skills asks a roofer for information nobody hiring a roofer wants, and every field that does not earn its place costs a signup.
The approach
Blukers is a Flutter and Dart app over Firebase and a REST API, mobile-first because a phone is the only device most of its users bring to a job site. The matching algorithm was built for how trades hiring actually works, scoring four factors rather than keywords: skill overlap against what the job specifically requires, proximity to the worker's home, since travel time matters more in trades, certification and license match, and availability against the employer's start date. That weighting dramatically reduced irrelevant listings. Onboarding captures trade skills and specializations, certifications and licenses, equipment familiarity, physical capabilities and availability, and work location preferences, and nothing else, reaching a complete work-ready profile in under five minutes. Location services run real-time geolocation with radius-based search, traffic-aware commute estimates, push notifications for new jobs inside a preferred radius, and map-based browsing. Load handling covers background match calculation, CDN-cached company profiles and listings, and batched notification delivery.
The outcome
Blukers is live at blukers.com with 25K+ downloads and job seekers across iOS and Android, a 4.8/5 average rating, and 1.5M+ jobs listed by employers across the United States and Mexico. Three lessons shaped the build more than any single feature. Designing for the actual user rather than for assumptions about them meant optimizing for older Android devices, smaller screens, and spotty job-site connectivity, so the app stayed data-efficient, offline-capable, and quick on budget hardware. Speed of onboarding directly affects adoption, because every additional field in the signup flow costs users, which is why the profile asks only for what blue-collar hiring actually turns on. And trust is earned differently in this market: workers here have been burned by platforms that promise jobs and deliver spam, so job quality verification and employer vetting got real investment, which paid back in word-of-mouth growth inside trade communities.
